Weight loss tablets (orlistat)

Treatment in 3 easy steps

Some people who use orlistat in combination with a low-fat, reduced-calorie diet lose 10% of their body weight in six months. Not everyone loses this much though. Your pharmacist will give you advice on an appropriate healthy diet.

Is orlistat right for me?

Orlistat might be right for you if your BMI is over 30, but it’s not a quick fix. You’ll still need to commit to a low-fat, reduced-calorie diet. The tablets work by blocking chemicals in your gut which digest fat.

The undigested fat is not absorbed into your body and is passed out when you poo. This means that if you eat a lot of fat, you can develop side effects including diarrhoea, wind and oily spotting on your underwear. For this reason, it is recommended that you limit your fat intake to under 30% of your total calorie intake while taking orlistat.

"There is good evidence that making even small changes to your lifestyle can add up to large benefits when it comes to weight loss. Orlistat certainly isn't an alternative to reducing the calories you eat and increasing the calories you burn with exercise, but some people find it helps them with their weight loss journey."
