What to do if your blue inhaler runs out

Your reliever (or blue) inhaler contains a medicine called salbutamol. Salbutamol works by relaxing the muscles of the airways in the lungs, making it easier to breathe. It starts working straight away. Although a blue inhaler relieves breathlessness, it does not prevent the breathlessness from happening in the first place.

It’s really important to have your blue inhaler in easy access just in case your symptoms flare up. If you lose it, or it’s run out and you can’t get a GP appointment, your pharmacist can prescribe an emergency inhaler.

"If your asthma is well controlled, you should only need your reliever inhaler occasionally - perhaps when you're exercising or when you have a cold. But it’s important to have your blue inhaler nearby at all times. And it’s vital you get a replacement inhaler as soon as it runs out."
